Website redesign: six signs it's time

Slow to load, awkward on mobile, no enquiries… How to tell if your website needs a redesign, and how to do it without losing your Google rankings.

A website doesn't age overnight. It wears out gradually: a little slower each year, a little less like you, a little less effective. Here are the signs that should set alarm bells ringing.

1. It's slow

If your home page takes more than three seconds to load on a phone, plenty of visitors will leave before they've even seen it. Test it yourself on 4G, away from the office Wi-Fi.

2. It looks wrong on mobile

Tiny text, buttons too small to tap, a page you have to scroll sideways: these days, most visits come from a phone. A website designed for desktop first loses those visitors.

3. It no longer reflects who you are

Your services have changed, you have a new logo, your photos date back to when you opened. A website that's out of step with your business today sows doubt just when customers need to trust you.

4. It doesn't bring in enquiries

This is the most important sign. If your website gets visits but hardly any calls or messages, the problem is rarely traffic: it's how clear the message is, where the buttons sit or how much trust the page inspires.

5. You can't edit it

Changing your opening hours or a photo shouldn't mean calling in a supplier. If every change is a hassle, your website simply never gets updated.

6. It isn't secure

A crossed-out padlock or a “Not secure” warning in the browser is enough to scare people off. An HTTPS certificate is standard these days.

How to redesign without losing your Google rankings

A badly prepared redesign can wipe out years of SEO in a matter of days. Three precautions will keep you out of that trap:

  • Take stock of the pages that get visits and the searches you rank well for.
  • Redirect every old URL to the matching new page, so neither Google nor your visitors land on an error.
  • Keep what works: copy that ranks well gets rewritten with care, not deleted.

That's exactly what our redesign package includes: an audit of your current website before we touch anything, then a clean switchover with no downtime.
